The Doctoral School of Astronomy-Astrophysics of Paris Area (ED 127) is the only thematic doctoral school in France, in the field of astronomy and astrophysics. The school is supported by four universities or Institutes : the Paris Observatory (carrier), Université Paris-Sud (P11), Université Paris Diderot (P7) and UPMC (P6).

Since 2008, the Doctoral School organizes a biennial international school in the field of observational astronomy, intended for PhD students and postdocs. The third edition of this school will be held in March 2013. The previous two had been very successful and received about 40 participants each, representing more than fifteen different nationalities.
 
This is the third edition of a school with the goal to train young researchers, PhD students and postdocs, regardless of nationality, to the scientific exploitation of two recently launched European space missions, Planck and Herschel. The first results obtained by these two satellites, the most successful ever launched in their respective fields, are reshaping the landscape in many areas of astrophysics (cosmology, galaxies and large structures, star formation, interstellar medium, the solar system) and there is some urgency to introduce the concepts and specific methods of exploitation of their data to future researchers.

The school last one week and will follow the organization of the two schools previously held by the ED 127, a scheme that has proved itself and was appreciated by participants. The morning is devoted to lectures given by leading researchers, from around the world, and the afternoon is devoted to practical work in pairs around computers. These includes manipulating data from each satellite, a familiarization with the software to access, treatment and data analysis, using tools developed by space agencies and consortia of the two scientific missions. The astrophysical interpretation will also be addressed by numerical models developed by the community. We will offer to students the opportunity to explore the complete chain that goes from theory to the analysis of astrophysical observations.

From a practical standpoint, the whole school will be held at the International Centre of Pedagogical Studies (CIEP) in Sèvres, a center able to accommodate all participants in half-board at a reasonable cost and providing modern teaching facilities. The morning will be devoted to lectures and the afternoon, students will use the computer workstations in special rooms.
Students will be invited to present a poster on a topic that motivates them particularly. A laboratory visit will take place during a half day.
One feature of this school is to target a wide international audience, particularly to developing countries. Accordingly, we maintain a low registration fee, thanks to a call for funding by several partners.

L’Ecole Doctorale Astronomie-Astrophysique d’Île-de-France (ED 127) est une école doctorale thématique multi-sites, la seule en France, dans le domaine de l’astronomie et de l’astrophysique. Les 4 établissements co-habilités pour cette école sont : l’Observatoire de Paris (établissement porteur), l’Université Paris-Sud (P11), l’Université Paris Diderot (P7) et l’UPMC (P6).

L’ED 127 organise depuis 2008 une école internationale biennale dans le domaine de l’astronomie observationnelle, destinée aux doctorants et postdoctorants. La troisième édition de cette école aura lieu du 15 au 19 Avril 2013. Les deux précédentes avaient remporté un grand succès et avaient accueilli environ 40 participants chacune, représentant plus de quinze nationalités différentes (http://ufe.obspm.fr/rubrique255.html).

Il s’agit pour cette troisième édition d’une école thématique destinée à former de jeunes chercheurs, doctorants et postdoctorants, sans condition de nationalité à l’exploitation des résultats de deux missions spatiales européennes récemment lancées, PLANCK et HERSCHEL. Les premiers résultats obtenus par ces deux satellites, les plus performants jamais lancés chacun dans son champ, sont en train de bouleverser le paysage dans plusieurs domaines de l’astrophysique (cosmologie, les galaxies et grandes structures, formation stellaire, milieu interstellaire, système solaire) et il devient urgent et important d’initier les futurs chercheurs aux concepts et aux méthodes spécifiques d’exploitation de leurs données.

L’école durera une semaine et se déroulera suivant le schéma des deux écoles précédemment organisées par l’ED 127, schéma qui a fait ses preuves et a été apprécié des participants. La matinée est consacrée à des cours magistraux donnés par des chercheurs de renom, venus du monde entier, et l’après-midi est consacrée à des travaux pratiques en binômes autour de postes de travail informatiques. Ces travaux pratiques sur l’exploitation des données de chaque satellite, par une familiarisation avec les logiciels d’accès, de traitements et d’analyse des données, grâce aux outils développés par les agences spatiales et les consortia scientifiques des deux missions. L’interprétation astrophysique sera également abordée en faisant « tourner » des modèles numériques mis au point par la communauté. On proposera ainsi aux étudiants de parcourir la chaîne complète qui va de la théorie à l’analyse astrophysique des observations.

D’un point de vue pratique, l’ensemble de l’école se déroulera au Centre International d’Etudes Pédagogiques (CIEP) à Sèvres, un centre capable d’accueillir l’ensemble des participants en demi-pension pour un coût raisonnable et offrant des locaux d’enseignement modernes et bien adaptés au nombre d’étudiants visé. Le matin sera consacré à des cours magistraux et, l’après-midi, les étudiants utiliseront les postes de travail informatiques dans des salles dédiées.
Les étudiants seront invités à présenter un poster sur un sujet qui les motive particulièrement. Une visite de laboratoires sera organisée durant une demi-journée.
Une des caractéristiques de cette école est de viser un public large, en particulier vers les pays en développement. En conséquence, nous affichons des frais d’inscription bas, grâce à un appel à des financements par plusieurs partenaires.
