AStroParis promotes interdisciplinarity, a key element in astrophysics and space science.

The interdisciplinary nature of astrophysics (e.g. maths, various branches of physics, chemistry), the logic of project development (both for research contracts and for heavy infrastructures) and the activities carried out around instrumental and system engineering (e.g. at the C²ERES space pole), and its numerous interactions with the society at large (e.g. popularization of science, legal issues, movie industry) are all reasons for developing the activities of the graduate program in connection with other similar programs of PSL.


The interfaces of Astrophysics with other scientific disciplines are numerous, as demonstrated by the existence of a program such as IRIS OCAV. AStroParis wishes to promote interdisciplinarity by exchanging trainees with other PGs and by the flexibility provided by the possibility of following modules in parallel with an internship.
- Mathematics : the link is particularly strong for the gravitation and dynamics themes ;
- Theoretical physics : this field is further expanded by the expanding field of gravitational wave physics ;
- Chemistry ; for theoretical developments or laboratory experiments under the diverse conditions proposed by astrophysics (planetology, exoplanetology, interstellar medium, etc.) ;
- Biology : exobiology is a field in full expansion, to which astrophysics strongly participates by the importance of the exoplanet studies, by the Martian prospection, by the study of the frozen satellites of the solar system, or by the perspective of return samples of small bodies ;
- Engineering : for the many instrumental projects of the discipline. The new field of nanosatellites promoted by PSL’s C²ERES space pole opens up new interdisciplinary perspectives for payloads related to biology experiments or Earth observation ;
- Data sciences : our projects now deliver data on catalogs of objects exceeding one billion units ; data from interferometers such as Alma exceed one hundred gigabytes per night of observation, and future large readings such as the LSST, paving the way for transient astronomy, will provide 200 terabytes of raw data per night.

This list is not exhaustive, which is why we prefer a flexible format to make interdisciplinarity effective, and to support the creative expression of applicants, via internships, with the freedom to follow modules in other PGs.

This interdisciplinarity works both ways, with a need to train our students in these other PGs, and to welcome students from other PGs. Astrophysics presents a framework for the application of many topics in conditions that can be very different from those commonly encountered, such as the very particular thermodynamic conditions of various astrophysical environments, space conditions for engineering...
